Configuring Grandstream HT Series FXS VoIP Gateways
Introduction
FXS gateways connect internal analog devices such as fax machines and analog phones and register them as extensions / fax extensions to your PBX. Those extensions can be addressed as normal phones, however, their functionality is limited due to the capabilities of the analog technology.
Step 1: Add and Choose Device
- Navigate to “Advanced” > “FXS/DECT” within the 3CX Management Console and select “Add FXS/DECT”:
- Select Brand: Grandstream
- Select Model/Device: Grandstream HT812 or Grandstream HT814
- MAC Address: Enter the “WAN MAC Address” of the Grandstream gateway (Without colons or dashes)
- Press “OK” to create the device.
Step 2: Configure the Gateway
- Verify the settings in the “General” tab of the Gateway settings page.
- Set the “Provisioning Method” to “Local LAN” or “3CX SBC” depending on your setup.
- Note: If you select the 3CX SBC, enter the Static LAN IP Address of the SBC that is configured on the remote network.
- If using the HT8xx Gateway for faxing, choose the fax sending Transmission Mode.
- FAX in T.38
- Fax in Audio G711(Pass Through)
Step 3: FXS Line Setup
- Go to the “Extensions” tab
- Select the extensions you wish to have configured on this device.
- Click “OK” to complete the configuration of the Gateway device.
Step 4: Prepare the Grandstream FXS Gateway
Make sure that your Grandstream device is factory reset. If not, reset the Grandstream FXS Gateway by pressing and holding the “Reset” button for about 7 seconds.
The Grandstream FXS gateway is configured, by default, to have an IP Address assigned via DHCP. To find out the IP Address defined by the Gateway:
- Connect an analog telephone device to either Port 1 or Port 2
- Pick up the receiver. A dial tone should be heard
- Dial *** (3 times the star symbol)
- You should hear the prompt “Enter a menu option”
- Dial 02 (zero two)
- You should hear the prompt “IP Address” followed by the IP Address being read out.
- Connect via your browser to the IP Address mentioned in the steps above
- The default username and password is: admin / admin
(This will be changed later on when the device is provisioned)
Step 5: Update the Firmware (If firmware is not the latest)
- Download the latest firmware for your device from here.
- Go to “Advanced Settings”.
- At the bottom of the page, go to the “Upload Firmware” option and click “Upload from local directory”.
- Browse to the downloaded firmware file.
- Click “Open”
- Click “Upload Firmware”
After a few minutes, you will be able to log in to the device and start using it again.
Step 6: Upload the configuration to the gateway
- Go to the “FXS/DECT” page in the Management Console.
- Select your gateway device.
- Click “Edit”
- Right click the Provisioning Link and select “Save Target as”, and save it to your disk. This XML file will be the configuration file of your gateway.
- Log on to the gateway via web browser, using the default username and password, as mentioned above.
- Go to the “Advanced Settings” tab.
- At the bottom of the page, click “Upload from local directory” from the “Upload Configuration” option.
- Click “Choose File”
- Navigate to the XML file you downloaded from the 3CX Management Console.
- Click “Open”
- Click “Upload Configuration”
During this time the gateway will apply the configuration to the gateway. When the gateway is ready, you will see the Power LED on, The WAN LED on, as well as the LEDs for the ports which you have configured. You will be able to see the normal extensions status in the “Extensions” page of the PBX. If you are using FAX Extensions, you will see the status of these in the “System Extensions” page.
