Configuring a Telstra - Business SIP
Network Topology
In order to use a Telstra Business SIP Trunk, you will be provided with an NTU (Network termination unit) device, through which you will be exchanging VoIP traffic with the Telstra network. The following 2 network topologies can be used.
NTU Attached
Gateway Attached
The 2 topologies are explained in more detail later on in the guide.
Setting up the NTU
Before configuring the trunk into 3CX the NTU must be configured and the appropriate data must be collected. This guide will not go through the installation of the NTU in your network. For this you can follow the Telstra guide found here:
Along with the NTU, every customer receives an email with credentials for the Telstra management portal. You will need to login to your portal and collect the device credentials which will allow your NTU to register to the Business SIP Platform.
The credentials can be found under the SIP Trunk / SIP NTU page.
Now that you have these credentials you can proceed with the NTU configuration. You can connect directly with the device through the 0/2 or 0/3 port to the 192.168.9.1 IP address.
The default username and password are:
Username:user
Password: password
- The NTU will ask you to change the default credentials the first time it is accessed. Choose your new username and password and click “Save”. Login again with your new credentials and proceed by choosing to start the provisioning wizard.
- The first step is to set up your IP type. We strongly recommend choosing a Static IP and filling the network details accordingly.
- Click “Next” to save your settings and proceed to the next step where the NTU will auto-detect your WAN connection. Once your WAN connection has been detected click “Next”.
- You will then be prompted for the device credentials collected from the Telstra portal. Make sure the credentials are entered correctly and press “Save”. If you now navigate to the “Voice” tab the registration state should appear as “Registered”.
- At this point you are ready to configure the settings for the PBX connection. Navigate to the “Provisioning Wizard” and select the “Ethernet (SIP PBX)” as your PBX type and click “Save”.
- In the Next screen choose the “3CX PBX” from the “PBX Profile” menu under the “Main IPPBX Settings”. The next step is to choose your network topology depending on your setup.
Note: If at the time of installation the 3CX profile is not available in the NTU, you can temporarily select the “NEC SL2100” profile which is known to work with 3CX and continue.
The 2 options are “NTU Attached” and “Gateway Attached” and are defined in the screenshots below.
The most common setup is the “Gateway Attached” topology and it is the one we recommend using.
- The next step is to fill in the network details depending on your network and setup and set up the authentication details that will be required later on, when adding the trunk to the 3CX PBX. Make sure that the “Register PBX” and “Authenticate PBX” options are enabled and fill in the “PBX Address of Record (AOR)” field with the last 9 digits of your pilot number. Use the same number as your Username. You can use any password you want.
Once you click “Save” you are ready to add the trunk into your 3CX PBX.
Configuring your SIP Trunk with 3CX
Go to the 3CX Web client and follow the guide on how to configure a SIP trunk.
Additional Information
On the Telstra network, there is a Malicious Call Trace (MCT) function that can be initiated. The Feature Access Code for this function is *57. In order for this functions to work correctly for endpoints via 3CX, you must do the following:
- Make sure you have created an Outbound Rule in 3CX that allows for dialing this number.
- The default 3CX dial code for CLIR is *5 which conflicts with this function. You must go to the Management Console → Settings → Dial Codes and change the “Block Outbound Caller ID” dial code to a different value.
