Configuring a Skyetel SIP Trunk

SIP Trunk Provider - Skyetel

Step 1: Sign up to Skyetel and create your SIP Trunk

  1. Sign up to Skyetel. Once logged in you can start creating your trunk.
  2. Navigate to the “SIP Registration” tab and select the “SIP Credentials” option.
  3. Click the “+Add Credentials” option and give it a description.
  4. Choose your “Routing Method > Route using the username”.
  5. The next screen will contain your Username and Password. Make a note of them as the password will not become visible again.

Step 2: Additional Configuration

Your newly purchased number may temporarily have an alert state.

  1. Go to the “Phone Numbers” / “Local Phone Numbers” and click the “Settings” option on your number.
  2. Set the SIP format to “+1NPANXXXXXX”.
  3. Under the “Call Routing” menu select the “SIP Credentials” option.
  4. Select the PBX you created in the previous step from the drop-down menu in the "SIP Credentials" section.
  5. Press “Save” for all the numbers you need to assign to your trunk.

Step 3: Buy phone numbers

  1. Go to the “Phone Numbers” tab and click the “Buy Phone Numbers” option. Fill out the information and proceed to checkout.
  2. Select the “Local Numbers” option, locate the number you want, enter the estimated Minutes Of Use (MOU) and click on “Buy”.

Step 4: Configuring your SIP Trunk with 3CX

  1. Go to the 3CX Web Client and follow the guide on how to configure a SIP trunk.
  2. Enter the main trunk number as E164. For example if your number is (888)-233-5678, it should be entered as +18882335678

Step 5: Configure a Number for SMS

  1. Navigate to “Tenants” and click on “Manage” from the drop down. Then click on “+Add Tenant” from the dashboard and complete the forms. Fill in details and press “Add”.
  2. In the "Tenants" list, click on "Add" under the "SMS Registration" section. Before proceeding, make sure to read the details provided in the "Information" tab.
  3. Fill in all the details needed under the “Company” and “Address” tabs.
  4. Navigate to the “Use Case” tab and fill in the information. Read more regarding the “Content Attributes” and “Use Case” you need to choose.

Step 6: Enable the SMS

  1. Go to “Phone numbers > Local numbers”. Select your number and click on the edit key on right.
  2. Go to the “SMS/MMS” tab. from the drop down choose “CallbackURL” and paste the 3CX SMS Webhook URL into the "URL" field.
  3. Set the “Method” to “Post”, enable the “Delivery confirmations” and click save.
  4. Go to “Billing>Settings > API Keys > Create”.
  5. Make a note of the newly created API key details. This is the only time the “Secret Key” will be available. 

Important: Due to the A2P 10DLC SMS changes, US numbers need to be registered by law. Follow this guide to register your phone numbers with the Wireless Carriers to avoid getting blocked. To use SMS/MMS functionality you need to create and verify a “Tenant”. Using unverified tenants may result in receiving a $10,000 fine (per message) or getting blocked from the recipient's wireless carrier. Read more here.
